There are a number of ways to configure your workstations to use the Echo•Filters Hosted Service DNS servers, the easiest being modifying your DHCP server settings.
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) automates the assignment of IP addresses, DNS Servers, default routers, and other IP parameters. The assignment usually occurs when the DHCP configured computer boots or regains connectivity to the network. The DHCP client sends out a broadcast message requesting a response from a DHCP server on the local network. The query is typically initiated immediately after booting and before the client initiates any IP based communication with other hosts. The DHCP server then replies to the client with its assigned IP address, DNS server and default gateway information.
When you order Echo•Filters Hosted Service, you will be emailed with the IP addresses of two of Pearl Software's DNS servers. The following examples demonstrate how to modify DHCP in various environments.
- Select Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | DHCP
- Select Scope | Scope Options
- Select DNS Servers
- Remove the IP Address of your existing DNS Servers
- Add the IP Addresses of the DNS Servers provided to you by Pearl Software
- Save Your Changes

If you are using a commercially available router (e.g. LinkSys or DLink), set the DNS
servers in the Network Settings panel of the router setup page. The following demonstrates connecting to a Netgear router (consult your router's user manual for instructions specific to your router):
- Start a Web browser and connect to the IP address of the router (the default is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)
- Log into the router when prompted
- Select Basic Settings
- Add the IP Addresses of the DNS Servers provided to you by Pearl Software
- Save Your Changes
If you do not use DHCP through a server or if your router does not support custom DNS configurations, you must then set each
machine DNS addresses at the workstation. You may leave the DHCP enabled for the local
network IP address. The following demonstrates modifying the DNS settings directly on a Windows XP machine.
- Select Start | Settings | Network Connections | Local Area Connection
- Select Properties
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Select Use the following DNS server addresses
- Add the IP Addresses of the DNS Servers provided to you by Pearl Software
- Save Your Changes
After you have completed the above steps, you can verify your configuration is
working by visiting http://www.BlockTest.com.
If your configuration is working properly, you should see a Web page telling you that the page you
are trying to visit has been blocked by the filter.
If your configuration is not working properly, you will see a page warning you that you should not be able to visit this site.
If you set your DNS at a DHCP Server or Router and do not see the blocked page during testing,
it usually means your local machine(s) still have their old DNS information. Type IPCONFIG /ALL from a command prompt to view the currently
assigned DNS servers for your machine.
To update the DNS servers for your machine, you can reboot the machine or type IPCONFIG /RELEASE from a command prompt. Next type IPCONFIG /RENEW.
